Carolyn McCain, MBA
Mason Health
Chief Human Resource Officer
Carolyn is the Chief Human Resource Officer for Mason Health, a Critical Access Hospital and healthcare system in Shelton, Washington. Carolyn holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business & Human Resource Management from the University of Phoenix, and a Master of Business Administration from Baker College, Center for Graduate Studies.
Carolyn has been an HR professional since 1998 with a focus solely in the healthcare sector since 2003. Using the phrase ‘healthcare sector’ is quite broad, so more specifically, she has supported: Cardinal Health; Apria Healthcare; skilled nursing; acute physical rehabilitation and long-term post-acute hospitals; and, since 2016, Critical Access Hospitals and health systems. “Supporting those who take care of our communities is my true passion,” Carolyn shared. “While I’m not a caregiver myself, I believe that HR plays a critical role in caring for our staff, who are, in turn, able to provide the best care for patients. At Mason Health, I’m excited to be part of a team where relationships and trust are at the heart of what we do.”
On the work front, Carolyn is passionate about setting leaders up for success through robust leadership development opportunities while ensuring employees are treated equitably under an organization’s mission, vision, and values. She currently oversees a team of 10 Human Resource and Learning & Development professionals serving a workforce of just over 850. Over the past 10 years, her focus has been bringing consistent policy application and practices to the organizations she is supporting while educating leaders in the best practices when it comes to managing the workforce and employee relations.
Carolyn was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. She has one adult child, Drew, age 26. Carolyn has lived in several big cities and rural communities throughout her life. There are pros and cons to both, but she is thoroughly enjoying Shelton, Washington, which is a blend of both, very much! In her free time, she enjoys reading, riding ATVs, listening to music and spending time with her dog. She’s also an avid baker, known for her homemade treats like chewy oatmeal cherry cookies and lemon blueberry pound cake, which have become a favorite among her colleagues.
